RRB notes on Psalm 76

Psalms 76 KJV

To the chief Musician on Neginoth, A Psalm or Song of Asaph.

1. In Judah is God known: his name is great in Israel. [1]

[1] The Lord’s name is not “great in Israel” right now. The average modern Jew today is a practical atheist.

2. In Salem [2] also is his tabernacle, and his dwelling place in Zion.

[2] “Salem” is another name for Jerusalem. The word means “peace” (as in Shalom and Solomon). Jerusalem means “city of peace.” The irony is that the city is attacked nine times in the Old Testament (three of those by Nebuchadnezzar), four times during the intertestamental period, once by Titus (A.D. 70), fourteen times during the Middle Ages, Allenby “liberated” it in 1917, and then the Arabs, Moslems, and Palestinians took over with the American and European new media to help them out (see App. 58). But God calls it “the city of peace” because when He brings peace to this earth, it will come at that city (vs. 3; Psa. 46:7-9; Hag. 2:7-9).

3. There brake he the arrows of the bow, [a] the shield, and the sword, and the battle. Selah.

4. Thou art more glorious and excellent than the mountains of prey.

5. The stouthearted are spoiled, they have slept their sleep: and none of the men of might have found their hands.

6. At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, both the chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep. [3] [b]

[3] Figurative; the machines (chariots) are in “a dead sleep” just like the horses. In my generation, we called the cars “chariots.” To this day, a motor is said to “die” when it cuts off. And what are 21st-Century machines doing having “horsepower”? Imagine the utter hypocrisy of the scholars criticizing the “archaic” language of the King James text and then using 17th-Century English to describe their vehicles!

7. Thou, even thou, art to be feared: and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry?

8. Thou didst cause judgment to be heard from heaven; the earth feared, and was still,

9. When God arose to judgment, to save all the meek of the earth. [c] Selah.

10. Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain.

11. Vow, and pay unto the LORD your God: let all that be round about him bring presents unto him that ought to be feared.

12. He shall cut off the spirit of princes: he is terrible to the kings of the earth. [d]
