Proverbs Chapter 29

Proverbs 29 KJV

1. He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy. [a]

2. When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.

3. Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance. [b]

4. The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it.

7. The righteous considereth the cause of the poor: but the wicked regardeth not to know it.

8. Scornful men bring a city into a snare: [c] but wise men turn away wrath.

9. If a wise man contendeth with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest.

12. If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked. [e]

13. The poor and the deceitful man meet together: the LORD lighteneth both their eyes.

14. The king that faithfully judgeth the poor, his throne shall be established for ever. [f]

16. When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increaseth: but the righteous shall see their fall.

17. Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.

18. Where there is no vision, [1] the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

[1] A Christian must maintain three visions: the vision of the risen Christ (Acts 9:3-10), New Jerusalem (Rev. 21-22), and the “harvest fields” (Matt. 9:37-38). A Christian that loses “the vision” of unsaved people in Hell (Matt. 13:49-50; Luke 16:22-31; Rev. 14:9-11, 20:11-15) is absolutely good for nothing (see note on Prov. 24:10).

A false vision is worse than no vision at all (1 Kings 22:6-12; Jer. 29:23; Ezek. 13:6-7). What the world calls “a vision” is depravity degenerated to annihilation. All unsaved prophets have the same “prophetic vision”: (1) Get everybody together, (2) Level all religions, classes, sexes, and races, (3) Have everybody share equally, (4) Eliminate war and capital punishment, and (5) Populate outer space.

19. A servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understand he will not answer.

20. Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

21. He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child shall have him become his son at the length.

22. An angry man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression. [h]

23. A man’s pride shall bring him low: [i] but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.

24. Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth cursing, and bewrayeth it not.

25. The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.

26. Many seek the ruler’s favour; but every man’s judgment cometh from the LORD.

27. An unjust man is an abomination to the just: [j] and he that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked. [k]

Note on Prov. 24:10 KJV

If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small. [1]

[1] Verses 10-12 deal with one of the most serious problems in the Body of Christ in America since 1933: the absolute refusal of American Christians to witness and tell unsaved adults they’re going to Hell when they die, although they know they will. They were commanded to witness (Prov. 31:8; Acts 1:8), and to warn people that they could die in their sins and wind up in the Lake of Fire (Ezek. 18:20-24; Acts 20:26-27). Ninety-five percent of them will not do it, and about 85% of the preachers will not do it. They do not want to risk being ridiculed or losing their social status or “image” among their friends and neighbors.

Note on Prov. 22:24 KJV

Make no friendship with an angry man; [2] and with a furious man thou shalt not go:

[2] Back in the 1960’s and 70’s, John R. Rice wrote a number of letters to people to advise them not to read any of my material because I was an “angry man.” They were to have no “friendship” with me. That would eliminate Jesus Christ (Matt. 23:13-33; Mark 3:5; John 2:14-16), Martin Luther, Billy Sunday, Mordecai Ham, Sam Jones, Bob Jones Sr., and four dozen other soulwinning, Bible-believing evangelists.

Note on Prov. 4:18 KJV

But the path of the just is as the shining light, [2] that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.

[2] Verses 14-19 are a good sample of the many “polarities” found in Proverbs. The Buddhist “oneness doctrine” of Yin and Yang is alien to both Testaments. In the Bible, it is either black or white, Heaven or Hell, God or the Devil. There is no integration, compromise, “concords,” or agreements with the world’s seven great paths to Hell: Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Protestantism, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. Other examples of “polarity” in Proverbs can be found in Proverbs 9:8, 10:2-9, 14-18, 28, 30-32, 11:1-6, 17.
